What is editing worth? Few people assume that having their work edited is worth it anymore. We have to show that it’s worth significant time and money.
Richard Adin at An American Editor has some suggestions in his most recent post, The Business of Editing: Explaining the Price of Editing. He points to this YouTube video as a good illustration:
This is something all editors have to think about, including lawyers. Should a client pay an extra billable hour for a little rearranging, rewriting, and proofreading? Should a law firm have its own editors, or hire independent ones (in the same way it might hire an investigator)?
We must answer these questions. Sadly, few lawyers think to ask them anymore.
